Brooke Mahnken (Maui Invasive Species Committee) will share insights from Hawai‘i’s ongoing efforts to detect and manage little fire ants (Wasmannia auropunctata) on Maui. Christina Boser (U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service) will discuss the ecology\, spread\, and management of Argentine ants (Linepithema humile)\, drawing on her experience with eradication and control efforts in sensitive island ecosystems in California. Dr. Christopher Hayes (North Carolina State University) will highlight the emerging threat posed by Asian needle ants (Brachyponera chinensis)\, including their impacts on native ecosystems and human health. \n\n\n\nTogether\, these presentations will provide an overview of the biology\, impacts\, and management strategies associated with invasive ants\, along with practical lessons for early detection and response. Originally from Washington state\, he joined MISC in 2005 as part of the plant field crew and later became the program’s operations and GIS specialist. Since 2016\, he has coordinated MISC’s efforts to detect and manage little fire ants (Wasmannia auropunctata) on Maui\, using spatial data and field operations to support early detection\, containment\, and response efforts. Brooke holds a B.S. in Biology from the University of Washington. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nChristina Boser\, U.S. Fish and Wildlife ServiceChristina Boser is a biologist with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and an ecologist with more than 15 years of experience in conservation\, invasive species management\, and collaborative research. Her work has focused extensively on invasive ants\, particularly Argentine ants (Linepithema humile)\, and their impacts on sensitive ecosystems in California. She has led and contributed to multi-agency partnerships\, including the California Islands Argentine Ant Eradication Fellowship\, advancing innovative strategies for detection\, control\, and long-term ecosystem recovery. Christina holds a Bachelor of Applied Science in Biology and Environmental Studies from the University of Wisconsin–Madison and a Master’s degree in Ecology from the State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nChristopher Hayes\, PhD\, North Carolina State UniversityDr. Christopher Hayes is an entomologist at North Carolina State University whose research focuses on the ecology\, behavior\, and management of urban and structural pest insects. He leads the Hayes Structural Pest Research Lab\, where his work examines invasive pests such as Asian needle ants and Formosan termites\, as well as other medically important insects\, to better understand how they spread and how management strategies can reduce their impacts. Dr. Hayes earned his B.S. in Environmental Sciences from North Carolina State University\, an M.S. in Global Health from Duke University\, and a Ph.D. in Entomology from North Carolina State University.

SUMMARY:What's on Your Boots? Seeds\, Invasive Species\, and Landscape-Level Patterns from Boot Brush Stations at Elk Island National Park
DESCRIPTION:Seed dispersal is a natural process that helps keep ecosystems healthy and resilient. However\, when people visit parks\, they can unknowingly carry seeds on their boots—including seeds from invasive plants—which can change what grows where. Programs like PlayCleanGo help reduce this risk by encouraging visitors to clean their gear and by providing opportunities to educate visitors and monitor seed movement. In this talk\, we’ll share results from a pilot study using PlayCleanGo boot brush stations at Elk Island National Park. We found that visitors can carry up to 4\,000 viable seeds in just one litre of soil\, with more than 30\,000 viable seeds collected at boot brush stations over a single summer. In total\, 57 plant species were identified—about half of which were only found through visitor dispersal—and more than 50% were non-native. Notably\, visitor-dispersed seeds were consistent across trailheads and independent of visitor volume\, highlighting that visitor activity can actively homogenize the landscape and drive significant ecological change. \n\n\n\nThis webinar is being presented as part of PlayCleanGo Awareness Week\, a collaborative initiative led in partnership with NAISMA\, Invasives Canada\, CONABIO\, and partners across North America to help prevent the spread of invasive species. SUMMARY:Webinar: Starry Trek: Mobilizing Volunteers for Early Detection of Aquatic Invasive Species
DESCRIPTION:Since 2017\, Minnesota’s Starry Trek Program has demonstrated how coordinated volunteer engagement can significantly expand early detection capacity for aquatic invasive species. Originally launched as a statewide effort to search for starry stonewort (Nitellopsis obtusa)\, an invasive freshwater green alga that can form dense mats and disrupt lake ecosystems\, Starry Trek has grown into a successful model for large scale\, volunteer powered surveillance. Each year\, hundreds of trained participants survey public water accesses across the state\, contributing to the discovery of new infestations of starry stonewort and other priority aquatic invasive species. In this webinar\, we will explore how Starry Trek was built\, how it has evolved over time\, and what lessons have emerged from organizing a recurring\, statewide volunteer detection event. SUMMARY:Webinar: Coconut rhinoceros beetle (CRB\, Oryctes rhinoceros) has established a foothold in the Americas
DESCRIPTION:The coconut rhinoceros beetle (CRB) Oryctes rhinoceros is endemic to Asia where the adult beetles feed on palms by boring into the growing point\, damaging emerging fronds and in extreme cases\, killing the palm. Larvae develop on dead palm trunks and rotting organic matter organic matter creating a close association between the beetle and its host. Through shipping and trade CRB has been introduced to the Pacific islands where\, in the absence of natural enemies\, it has become a severe pest of coconuts and other palms affecting economic development and livelihoods requiring control actions. CRB has spread in distinct waves through Polynesia\, Melanesia and\, in the current century\, to Micronesia and the Hawaiian islands. Interisland spread over long distances has been made possible through shipping and air links. In 2022 photos of suspected CRB were posted on iNaturalist and social media photos indicated the distinctive damage of CRB. A visit to the site\, with collection of specimens and analysis confirmed presence of the pest. In the webinar\, we will describe the process of discovery and the use of citizen science and social media to provide early indicators of pest invasion. We will discuss the current situation of CRB in Mexico and the potential for damage and economic losses should it enter the Caribbean basin and tropical Americas. \n\n\n\nThis webinar is being presented in partnership by the Pacific Regional Invasive Species and Climate Change Management Network (Pacific RISCC) and NAISMA. \n\n\n\n\nREGISTER NOW\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDr. Trevor Jackson\, MAF/AgResearch\, New ZealandDr. Trevor Jackson has spent his career on biocontrol and IPM with MAF/AgResearch based in Aotearoa/New Zealand working on a variety of projects. He has worked on CRB over 30 years in Asia and the Pacific specializing in incorporating the biocontrol Oryctes virus into IPM systems. He recently helped develop the “Strategic Action Plan for Coconut Rhinoceros Beetle (CRB) Management and Containment across Pacific Island Countries and Territories” working paper produced by members of the Coconut Rhinoceros Beetle Working Group at the 2022 Pacific Ecological Security Conference (PESC)\, held in Palau 2022\, assisted the Papua New Guinea CRB Task Force confront the current CRB invasion in the NZ MFAT funded “Pacific Response to Coconut Rhinoceros Beetle” and worked with Women in Business Development in Samoa to reduce impact of CRB on coconut supply chains. He remains involved in current programs to limit the spread and reduce damage from CRB and identified the current outbreak in Mexico. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDr. Sulav Paudel\, Bioeconomy Science Institute\, New ZealandDr. Sulav Paudel is a Senior Scientist at the Bioeconomy Science Institute (BSI)\, New Zealand\, specializing in biosecurity\, invasion ecology\, and pest risk assessment. He has extensive experience across the Pacific\, South Asia\, and Southeast Asia\, working on invasive pests including the Coconut Rhinoceros Beetle. His work focuses on invasion dynamics\, risk assessment\, surveillance\, and biosecurity response\, integrating field data\, spatial modelling\, and decision-support tools to strengthen pest management and prevention. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMiguel Nájera-Rincón\, UNIFAP/UNAM\, MexicoMiguel Nájera-Rincón is a specialist on biocontrol from UNIFAP/UNAM\, Mexico. SUMMARY:Webinar: Developing a Recipe for Success: Can Public Harvest Control Invasive Species?
DESCRIPTION:From nutria to lionfish\, natural resource managers and culinary artists have speculated that harvest and use of invasive species could provide a means of managing or even eliminating nuisance populations. Through multiple reviews of the scientific and popular literature\, we have concluded that\, if used properly\, incentivizing and encouraging public or commercial harvest could represent an opportunity to support management goals while simultaneously boosting economic development and environmental awareness. However\, if used incorrectly\, negative consequences such as generation of perverse incentives to further spread invaders can occur. In this talk\, we will highlight principles we believe can help promote success and minimize risks of harvest-based invasive species management approaches. We’ll review the biological\, ecological\, human health\, and socioeconomic factors involved in invasive species incentives. He combines fisheries ecology\, NRDA\, and endangered species expertise with advanced analytics and defensible AI workflows to solve high-stakes environmental problems involving contaminants\, habitat alteration\, and biological injury. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJason Goldberg\, MS\, MPPJason Goldberg is a Senior Management Analyst with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s Joint Administrative Operations programs. Among other roles\, he previously served as an injurious wildlife coordinator with the Service’s Branch of Aquatic Invasive Species. Jason also worked early in his career on Capitol Hill and with NOAA. In winter\, he keeps warm with a scarf made from invasive New Zealand possums. He can also confirm that lionfish and blue catfish do not taste like chicken. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSusan Pasko\, PhDSusan Pasko works within the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s Branch of Aquatic Invasive Species\, serving as the Executive Secretary of the Aquatic Nuisance Species Task Force\, an intergovernmental committee dedicated to the prevention and management of aquatic invasive species. Prior\, she served as the Aquatic Invasive Species Coordinator at NOAA Fisheries. In these roles\, Susan has worked with a variety of agencies and partners across the United States to develop and advance strategic and implementation plans that represent ANS Task Force priorities. Susan holds a B.S. in Marine Science from Stockton University and a PhD in Aquatic Ecology from Kent State University.

SUMMARY:Webinar: Building Capacity for Rapid Response: Interjurisdictional Invasive Species Rapid Response Team (IInSRRT)
DESCRIPTION:The Interjurisdictional Invasive Species Rapid Response Team (IInSRRT) is a program being designed to support or lead\, as requested\, rapid response actions across jurisdictions in support of lead management authorities\, such as DOI land management agencies\, states\, tribes\, and territories. \n\n\n\nThe goal of the IInSRRT is to respond to nationally significant invasive species\, as appropriate to the DOI mission\, and across multiple jurisdictions regardless of land ownership within the authorities of DOI bureaus. The program structure is composed of the IInSRRT Coordinator\, an IInSRRT Guidance Group\, and deployment team responders initially composed of employees within the DOI. The Guidance Group provides guidance and support for the program. The IInSRRT Coordinator has been assisting in achieving management objectives flowing from the  National Early Detection Rapid Response (EDRR) Framework and other local\, regional\, and national efforts. The IInSRRT program is meant to increase resources available to support rapid response actions\, through Incident Command System (ICS) emergency response support that may include an interjurisdictional deployment team for invasive species incident response on and off DOI lands and waters as requested. \n\n\n\nThis presentation will provide an overview of the IInSRRT structure\, roles the program can support during response actions\, and provide one of many opportunities for suggestions on how to effectively implement the program. \n\n\n\n\nREGISTER NOW\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMcKayla Spencer\, Interjurisdictional Invasive Species Rapid Response Team CoordinatorMcKayla Spencer is the Interjurisdictional Invasive Species Rapid Response Team (IInSRRT) Coordinator for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS). She received her B.S. in Zoology from the University of Florida and her M.S. in Biology from Austin Peay State University with a thesis on comparative physiology and behavior of two native North American snakes. She worked with invasives species on Guam\, including Brown Treesnakes\, before working with other invasive species in Florida with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission as the state’s Nonnative Fish and Wildlife Program Coordinator. She now coordinates the IInSRRT program for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service\, implementing the program with partners to increase the capacity for invasive species rapid response.
