Mapping Standards short course

The NAISMA Mapping Data Standards Short Course, titled How to Implement the Mapping Standards, is an asynchronous, professional, online program designed to provide you with the knowledge needed to implement mapping data standards within your invasive species program. The course takes approximately 2 hours to complete.

This course consists of six sequenced video presentations, along with supplemental materials for in-depth learning and assessment. It was developed by professionals with real-world experience managing invasive species.

Course Access

Upon registration, students will have 30 days to access and complete the course. All participants are expected to watch each video in full and in sequence. A short quiz follows each video and must be passed with a score of 70% or higher to proceed. Participants may rewatch videos as needed within the access period. Participants will receive a reminder email before their 30-day access period ends to ensure they have time to finish the course and earn their certificate.

  • the definitions of terms used in the standards
  • what fields are required or optional and why
  • how to set up a simple database to record data according to the standard
  • how the standard and data fit into a larger invasive species management program


Who Should Enroll

This course is designed for individuals who want to learn more about mapping invasive species, as well as those already documenting, mapping, or monitoring invasive plants, animals, biological controls, or pathogens. It is open to anyone and there are no prerequisites.

A certificate from NAISMA will be issued upon successful completion.
