Protecting National Parks from Invasive Species

America's national parks preserve some of the most iconic and ecologically significant landscapes in the world. Protecting these treasured places from invasive species is essential to maintaining native biodiversity, ecosystem health, wildlife habitat, and visitor experiences for future generations.

The NAISMA Certified Weed Free Products Program provides national parks with a proven, proactive tool to reduce the risk of introducing and spreading invasive plants through forage, mulch, gravel, compost, and other products commonly used in park operations, construction, restoration projects, and visitor activities.

By incorporating Certified Weed Free Products into management practices, national parks help safeguard sensitive habitats while supporting broader invasive species prevention efforts across North America.

How can we help?

The Weed Free Products program is supported by the NAISMA team as well as a committee of industry professionals and researchers.

Leading the way

The National Park Service has long recognized the importance of preventing invasive species introductions before they occur. Two of America's most celebrated parks have joined NAISMA to champion and pilot the Certified Weed Free Products Program:

Great Smoky Mountains National Park

Home to extraordinary biodiversity and the most visited national park in the United States, Great Smoky Mountains National Park recognizes that prevention is one of the most effective and cost-efficient invasive species management strategies available. By supporting weed-free product standards, the park helps reduce pathways that can introduce invasive plants into sensitive ecosystems.

Yellowstone National Park

As the world's first national park and one of North America's most ecologically significant landscapes, Yellowstone National Park has demonstrated leadership in invasive species prevention by incorporating weed-free practices into land management activities. Yellowstone's commitment helps protect millions of acres of native grasslands, forests, wetlands, and wildlife habitat from invasive plant threats.
