New Forest Pest and Pathogen Short Course Launches Through NAISMA Academy

Forests across North America are increasingly threatened by invasive insects, diseases, and other organisms that damage ecosystems, disrupt biodiversity, and impact economies. To help build awareness and foundational knowledge, the North American Invasive Species Management Association (NAISMA) has launched a new online learning opportunity: the Forest Pest and Pathogen Short Course through NAISMA Academy.

This self-paced course provides an accessible introduction to forest pest and pathogen issues, helping learners understand how these threats are introduced, spread, detected, and managed. Designed for individuals seeking a high-level overview rather than technical training, the course equips participants with the knowledge needed to recognize the risks and play a role in prevention.

Understanding the Threat of Forest Pests and Pathogens

Invasive forest pests and pathogens are responsible for widespread ecological and economic damage across North America. From invasive insects that kill millions of trees to diseases that weaken entire forest systems, these threats are increasing as global trade, travel, and environmental changes create new pathways for introduction and spread.

The Forest Pest and Pathogen Short Course explores these challenges through real-world case studies and practical examples. Participants will learn about notable species, including:

These examples help illustrate broader concepts related to invasion biology, monitoring, prevention strategies, and early detection.

Rather than focusing on species-by-species management techniques, the course emphasizes a systems-level understanding of how forest pests and pathogens move through ecosystems and human networks.

A Practical Introduction to Forest Pest and Pathogen Prevention

Developed for accessibility and flexibility, the course takes approximately six hours to complete and can be completed at the learner’s own pace. It combines short videos, readings, interactive knowledge checks, and quizzes to reinforce key concepts.

Participants will explore topics including:

  • The ecological and economic impacts of forest pests and pathogens
  • Common human-mediated pathways of introduction and spread, including firewood movement, plant trade, and outdoor recreation
  • Prevention strategies and public engagement campaigns such as Don’t Move Firewood and PlayCleanGo®
  • Monitoring techniques and the role of community reporting in early detection
  • Case studies connecting science, policy, and real-world decision-making

Learners who complete all course components receive a certificate of completion.

Expanding Awareness of Forest Pest and Pathogen Risks

The course was intentionally designed to serve as an entry point for individuals who want to understand forest health challenges without needing advanced forestry or invasive species expertise.

“This course was developed to meet learners where they are,” said Teagan Wilmot, Education and Prevention Manager at NAISMA. “It’s intended as an introduction for people interested in forest health, invasive species prevention, or exploring a career in this field. Our goal is to help participants see the bigger picture and understand how prevention, pathways, and early action connect.”

By broadening awareness of forest pest and pathogen issues, the course encourages greater collaboration among land managers, educators, students, policymakers, and outdoor recreation communities.

“Prevention works best when more people understand the risks and the role they can play,” said Christie Trifone Millhouse, Executive Director of NAISMA. “This short course helps build a shared understanding of forest invasive species and the importance of early action to protect forest ecosystems.”

Who Should Take the Forest Pest and Pathogen Short Course?

The course is ideal for:

  • Students interested in environmental science or forestry careers
  • Early-career professionals in natural resource management
  • Educators and communicators working in environmental fields
  • Agency staff in related disciplines
  • Anyone seeking a clear introduction to forest pest and pathogen challenges in North America

Expanding Online Education Through NAISMA Academy

The Forest Pest and Pathogen Short Course is the newest addition to the NAISMA Academy’s growing portfolio of online training opportunities. Other courses cover topics such as invasive species management, terrestrial invasive plants, and classical weed biological control.

These programs provide science-based learning opportunities that support professionals and community members working to protect natural resources across North America.

Registration for the Forest Pest and Pathogen Short Course is now open.

The development of the course was made possible by generous support from the John C. Bock Foundation.
